In an interview with the Sputnik News Agency, Russia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alexander Grushko, accused Albanian authorities in Prishtina of escalating tensions in Kosovo. He called on Western nations to pressure Albin Kurti, prime minister of the autonomous province, to uphold its international treaty obligations. “All those who are influencing the policy of behavior of the so-called Kosovo should be putting pressure on it toward the direction of finding a political solution,” declared the Deputy Foreign Minister.

As previously reported by CD Media, Serbian authorities have blasted Germany’s role in encouraging the aggressive position of the authorities in Prishtina.“We are following with great concern the evolution of the situation in and around Kosovo,” Grushko told Sputnik. “We see that the Kosovar authorities are taking a course for escalation, while it is obvious to us that they are relying on overt and covert support from their curators, primarily from the European Union and Washington.”

“First of all, force Pristina to abandon its belligerent plans, which are fraught with destabilization of the Balkans, and comply with all previous obligations, including from the [2013] Brussels Agreement that provides for the establishment of a Community of Serb Municipalities as a central element in solving the Kosovo problem,” the Deputy Foreign Minister added.

In 2008, Albanian authorities in Pristina unilaterally proclaimed independence from Serbia. Since that time, Kosovo has been recognized by 98 out of 193 UN member states as an independent state, but not by Belgrade. The failure of the two sides to reach a diplomatic settlement has led to rising tensions.
