The 5,7-magnitude quake was bigger than the one from yesterday. It was also felt in Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, Kosovo, Montenegro, Slovakia, and Serbia.
The official statement from the National Research-Development Institute for Earth Physics says: "On February 14th, 2023 at 15:16:57 a medium-strength earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 took place in Oltenia, Valcea county at a depth of 6,2km.”
Two aftershocks with a magnitude of 3,4 and 3,5 were recorded at 15:26 and 15:29 local time. This comes less than 24 hours after a 5.2-magnitude earthquake shook Romania and the neighboring countries, followed by two aftershocks.
Several apartment buildings and a school in Targu Jiu have damaged walls and floors after the two earthquakes. In Gorj, the tremors caused landslides and damage to at least 30 buildings and cars stationed closed to them when pieces of roofs fell on top of the windshields.
No serious damage has been reported in the rest of the country, but the emergency services in various regions sent special forces to investigate possible damage to roads and buildings.
