The Biden Administration has announced sanctions on four top Bosnian Serb officials for the crime of passing legislation that the U.S. Government opposes. The law passed by the democratically elected National Assembly and signed into law by President Milorad Dodik, nullifies decisions made by Bosnia’s Constitutional Court on its territory. Bosnian Serb officials passed the measure to protect their autonomy because the Court, backed by the U.S. Government and the illegally appointed High Representative Christian Schmidt has ignored the provisions of the Dayton Agreement and worked to undermine their autonomy. It should be noted that the Court was trying to impose decision on Republika Srpska without any Serb participation in the Court’s decisions.
Brian E Nelson, U.S. undersecretary of the Treasury for terrorism and financial intelligence, admitted that the move. Was made purely for political motives, but claimed “This action threatens the stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the hard-won peace underpinned by the Dayton Peace Agreement.”
The new sanctions target four individuals for the crime of promoting what the Biden Administration considers “inflammatory legislation”: Nenad Stevandic, president of the Republika Srpska’s National Assembly; Prime Minister Radovan Viskovic; Minister of Justice Milos Bukejlovic; and Zeljka Cvijanovic, Serb member of the presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina. President Milorad Dodik is already under U.S. sanctions.
The move continues to undermine the United States’ credibility in the region. In weaponizing the dollar once again for political purposes, the Biden Administration is acting like a colonial ruler and forcing countries to look for an alternative to the U.S. dollar as the world’s reserve currency.
In a statement on Twitter, Milorad Dodik, promised to maintain his country’s independence against the blatant interference in its internal affairs. “The United States of America did not elect the officials of Republika Srpska, so they will not replace them either,” Dodik defiantly proclaimed. “The US thinks that this way they can discipline anyone who doesn’t think like them. Sanctions also show the impotence of a major global power such as the USA. Regardless of everything, they want to sanction this nation because we are the representatives of the people. They want to change us, for others to come who will be silent, nod and approve. We are not worried about these sanctions.”
