On Saturday, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić tasked Defense Minister Miloš Vučević with forming a new government. Vučević is a member of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).
“I propose to the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Miloš Vučević as a candidate for the Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia,“ the Serbian President wrote on Instagram.
The decision signed by Vučić, says that Vučević has thus far “performed the responsible and demanding functions of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, thus demonstrating that he possesses the dedication and expertise required to perform the duties of Prime Minister.”
During parliamentary elections held on December 17, 2023, the coalition led by the Serbian Progressive Party won 46.75 percent of the vote.
The deadline for the formation of the new government is 90 days from the date of the constitution of the Assembly of Serbia. If the parliament does not elect a government within that period, or if it does not elect a new government within 30 days from the day when the mandate of the previous government ended, the President of the Republic is obliged to dissolve the National Assembly.
As the Assembly was constituted on February 6, through the verification of the mandate of the new deputies, May 6 is the deadline for the formation of a new government.
