In an interview of Bulgarian radio, Kostadin Kostadinov, the leader of Bulgaria’s leading opposition party Vazrazhdane, Bulgaria cannot defend itself because of NATO and its policies, adding that his country is in a subordinate position and is not treated as an equal ally.

“We pay for a serious membership fee, but we have no proceeds. We can’t produce a weapon for ourselves. Serbia, for example, currently has a three times stronger army than Bulgaria, and produces over 80% of the combat equipment for its own use, it does not depend on anyone,” Kostadinov pointed out.

“In the year we entered NATO – 2004 – the Bulgarian army numbered 45,000 people, now the real number of troops is just over 15,000; we had 560 tanks in 2004, now we have under 80; our warships went from 62 to 6; our combat aircraft from 72 to 16,” the Bulgarian opposition leader enumerated. “To join NATO, our so-called partners have made us cut out our most powerful weapons and disarm our army, destroy our military-industrial complex, and removing conscription. We are reducing the reserves also, there are no more people for a reserve.”

Kostadin Kostadinov also pointed out that NATO is no longer a defensive alliance. "It is an aggressive alliance with very serious operations, the last one in 1999, when Yugoslavia was destroyed, without a declaration of war. Bulgaria’s defense potential is close to zero. Instead of relying on someone else to protect us, we should begin our recovery now. We have put forth a proposal to leave NATO, we must hold a referendum, we have to ask the people.”

Kostadinov added that “we are in a subordinate status, we are not equal allies. If NATO decides to attack Russia tomorrow, we will be ordered to participate in this military conflict.”
