After a clear first place finish in Bulgaria’s latest parliamentary election on Sunday, leader of the center right party GERB, Boyko Borissov described his party’s victory as “categorical.” Although his party’s first place finish is certain, the results do not show a significant increase in support for the party of the former Prime Minister.

According to Gallup, the election will result once again in a divided parliament:

    GERB-UDF 25.1% (63 MPs)

    Vazrazhdane 14.2% (36 MPs)

Continue the Change -Democratic Bulgaria B 14.1% (35 MPs)

Movement for Rights and Freedom - New Beginning 10.2% (26 MPs)

    ARF 8.4% (21 MPs)

Bulgarian Socialist Party - United Left 8.1% (20 MPs)

    TISP 6.9% (17 MPs)

    MECh 4.8% (12 MPs)

    Velichie 4% (10 MPs)

In his victory speech, Borissov declared “From today onwards – we are committed to form a government. With such a victory, we can accept to compromise, but we will not bypass the people’s vote. Our agenda will be fundamental for a future government.” He also thanked the Bulgarian people for a higher voter turnout. “With such a turnout, we can talk more calmly about how the new parliament will represent the will of the people,” he argued.

"Many changes could occur by tomorrow morning, except for who will be the clear winner. Parliament is math. The number of parties is of huge importance. If all these parties get in, I already know there will be no government,” Borissov admitted.

“We have worked with everyone else, we can work with everyone else. Everybody should do their own analysis of the results,” Borissov concluded. The former prime minister congratulated Vazrazhdane for their results but made it clear that the two political forces cannot work together due to their ideological differences and differences of their European parliamentary families – GERB’s MEPs are part of the center-right pro-European European People's Party, led by Ursula von der Leyen, while Vazrazhdane is aligned with the Eurosceptic Europe of Sovereign Nations party.

Vazrazhdane, Bulgaria’s patriotic, anti-globalist party, maintains strong support among an electorate that is weary of war and the loss of national sovereignty.
