A parliamentary committee in Bulgaria adopted a draft decision to lift the ban on Ukrainian grain imports into the country to the detriment of Bulgarian farmers. Bulgaria’s new government coalition, formed at the direction of the U.S. Embassy in Sofia, has made a series of controversial decisions in the past few months in support of globalist interests and in direct contradiction to the will of the Bulgarian people. The government previously approved arms shipments to Ukraine despite the fact that 70% of the Bulgarian people oppose the country's involvement in the war.

The draft decision for Bulgaria to lift the ban on Ukrainian import of certain products will take affect as of September 15, 2023. The decision must be approved by the full parliament, but given that it is a government initiative there is little doubt it will pass. Bulgaria’s National Grain Producer Association (NGPA) expressed outrage at the decision.

The decision will allow wheat, rapeseed, sunflower, and corn to be dumped on the Bulgarian market. As Ukraine does not have to follow EU standards, it makes it impossible for Bulgarian farmers, who must follow EU rules, to compete.

“To help people in distress is noble, to help an occupied country in a severe economic crisis is solidarity, but to ignore the needs of one's own country at the expense of another looks more like betrayal,” according to the statement from the NGPA. The organization insists that lifting the ban on Ukrainian imports is the quickest and surest way to destroy Bulgarian agriculture.

“The agriculture sector provides over 100,000 jobs and its demise spells serious economic and social problems. The loss of one farmer is the loss of jobs and heralds serious economic and social problems,” according to the NGPA. Adding that the government has provided no financial assistance to Bulgarian farmers to compensate for the damages they have suffered because of the war in Ukraine.
