With the situation in Romania rapidly deteriorating, the Alliance for the Union of Romanians, the country’s leading opposition party, has announced that it will organize a mass protest in support of democracy and free elections on Sunday, January 12th at 2:00 PM, in University Square in Bucharest.

A statement issued by the Alliance for the Union of Romanians declares: “Romanians have been waiting for five years for the end of Klaus Iohannis’ mandate and, with it, the opportunity for a new beginning, with a new government. Prisoners of a dysfunctional state and permanently humiliated by those who should respect and serve them with dignity, Romanians are forced today to prolong their torment. Iohannis is taking advantage of the situation that he and the PSD-PNL government have created to maintain the state of instability in Romania, postponing the resumption of elections.”

“The Constitutional Court of Romania was used without any scruples to play the Iohannis regime’s games, although it had no powers to either eliminate Diana Șoșoacă from the electoral race or to cancel the elections. After 35 years of anti-Romanian governments, the people chose to eradicate the evil from its roots! But the will of the Romanians was canceled by the same corrupt politicians who refused to accept a democratic transition. The Ciolacu government, free from the pressure of the elections, refuses to give up power and demonstrates once again the serious dysfunctions of the administration it leads.”

“The Ciolacu Government continues to burden the population with taxes, taking anti-Romanian measures and prejudicing the business environment against local producers... In a functional democracy, any inaccuracies in the campaign had to be resolved by the BEC, according to the electoral law. A democracy defended with means specific to tyranny becomes tyranny. Canceling the elections and forcing Romanians to resume the electoral process represents a serious violation of democracy.”

“We stand with the voters of Călin Georgescu, the most wronged by the cancellation of the 2nd round of elections, and we want Romania to truly become a democratic country and a functional state. On Sunday, January 12, at 2:00 PM, any Romanian can join the thousands of people fighting for their rights and for the future of children.”
