According to a report in the German publication WELT, Bulgaria secretly supplied Kiev with enough ammunition to meet one-third of its needs during the early phases of the war in Ukraine, at a time when Kiev’s Government was running desperately low on fuel and Soviet-caliber ammunition.
The Bulgarian Socialist Party, at the time a partner in the coalition government, categorically opposed arms shipments to Kiev, so Petkov lied to his own people, saying that it was not supplying armaments to Ukraine.
To cover-up what they were really doing, the Bulgarian Government, under Prime Minister Kiril Petkov of the We Continue the Change Party, used middlemen to transport the ammunition using overland routes through Hungary and Romania, as well as an airport in Poland. “According to our estimates, about a third of the ammunition needed by the Ukrainian army in the early phase of the war came from Bulgaria,” Petkov told WELT. In so doing, the government showed complete disdain for both the democratic process and its own people. As previously reported in The Balkan, over 65% of Bulgarians oppose supplying armaments to Ukraine.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba told WELT, “We knew that there were large quantities of ammunition needed at Bulgarian warehouses, so President Zelensky sent me so that I could use diplomatic leverage to obtain the necessary material.” The Bulgarian Government was not authorized to transfer weapons to Ukraine and kept the actions secret. The German publication also revealed that Petkov’s government did this at the insistence of Great Britain and the United States.
Petkov’s We Continue the Change Party has close ties to globalist elites, the World Economic Forum, and the disgraced cryptocurrency company Nexo, now under indictment by Bulgarian authorities. As previously reported in the Balkan, Nexo had close ties to Sam Bankman Fried and the bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX. Bankman Fried’s operation and Nexo both have ties to Ukraine and both are under investigation for money laundering. Nexo and FTX also both have ties to World Economic Forum.
Petkov’s revelations are clearly an attempt to position himself as the pro-Western candidate in likely upcoming elections this spring. His disclosures make it clear that the government in Sofia under his leadership served the interests of its Western masters with complete disregard for the Bulgarian people.
