Croatian President Zoran Milanović condemned German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s extremist statements at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) this week that Europe is “fighting a war against Russia.”
“Now, the German Foreign Minister says we must be united, because I quote, we are at war with Russia. I didn’t know that. Maybe Germany is at war with Russia, but then, good luck, maybe this time it turns out better than 70-odd years ago,” Milanović quipped referring to the failed Nazi invasion of Russia during World War II.
The German Foreign Minister has been one of the most outspoken advocates for escalating the conflict in Ukraine. She told the EU assembly on Tuesday that “we have to do more to defend Ukraine. Yes, we have to do more also on tanks…. we are fighting a war against Russia and not against each other.”
The Croatian President, who had been heavily criticized when he previously stated, “Washington and NATO are waging a proxy war against Russia through Ukraine,” took issue with Baerbock’s statements and firmly declared that Croatia “should in no way help” Ukraine militarily.
The Croatian President pointed out that he was especially baffled to hear such claims coming from the leader of the German Greens, which is allegedly a pacifist party equally opposed to the U.S. and the USSR, and not from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. He seemed to imply that the Greens and their allies were using the war in Ukraine to push their globalist agenda.
“If we are at war with Russia, then let’s see what we need to do. But we won’t ask Germany for its opinion. Let them figure out who is the actual chancellor over there,” Milanović added. “I’ve been in politics for a long time, and our country has been through a lot, but I’ve never seen this kind of madness before.”
The Croatian President also expressed his opposition to supplying Ukraine with tanks, saying “Those tanks may burn, or they may reach Crimea, but Croatia will have nothing to do with it.”
The German Foreign Minister’s war rhetoric also provoked condemnation from the Russian Foreign Ministry. Quoting Baerbock, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused the West of admitting that they had been planning the current conflict for years. “If we add this to Merkel’s revelations that they were strengthening Ukraine and did not count on the Minsk agreements, then we are talking about a war against Russia that was planned in advance,” she told reporters. “Don’t say later that we didn’t warn you.”
Zakharova added that Baerbock’s comments “show once again that the West is about to up the ante in the conflict, which will only draw it out and bring more casualties. The masks are off. This has not been about defending Ukraine for a long time now. Kiev and its NATO overseers are ready to do anything to inflict maximum damage on our country.”
