In a brazen escalation of anti-Christian hostility, Nikola Džufka (Nikolla Xhufka), a self-proclaimed “archbishop” of a non-existent “Orthodox Church of Kosovo,” has called on Pristina institutions to declare Serbian Patriarch Porfirije persona non grata. While falsely claiming medieval Serbian churches — such as the 14th-century Church of St. Archangel Michael near Podujevo — as “Albanian,” he openly announces plans to seize more holy sites. This is not the act of a lone eccentric, but a symptom of a deeper, state-tolerated campaign against the Serbian Orthodox Church and Christian presence in Kosovo.

Džufka is not recognized by any canonical Orthodox Church, including the Orthodox Church of Albania, which has repeatedly denounced him as a layman and fraud. Yet segments of the Kosovo Albanian political elite have platformed and even met with him, revealing how ethnic nationalism and radical ideology converge to rewrite history and erase Christian heritage.

Decades of Ethnic Cleansing and Cultural Annihilation

Since the end of the 1999 conflict, Kosovo has witnessed one of the most successful campaigns of ethnic and religious cleansing in modern Europe. Over 200,000 Serbs and other non-Albanians were expelled from the province in the immediate aftermath of NATO intervention. Many more have left in subsequent years due to constant pressure, leaving only a fragile remnant of around 100,000 Serbs, most concentrated in isolated enclaves.

The physical destruction has been devastating. More than 150 Serbian Orthodox churches and monasteries were destroyed or severely damaged after 1999, including UNESCO-protected medieval treasures. Iconic sites were burned, dynamited, or desecrated. At the same time, hundreds of new mosques — many financed by foreign radical donors from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and other Gulf sources — have sprung up across the region. This architectural and demographic transformation symbolizes a deliberate effort to Islamize and Albanize a land that was for centuries the spiritual heartland of Serbian Orthodoxy.

Attacks continue to this day. Churches are routinely broken into, robbed, and vandalized. Cemeteries are desecrated. Priests and believers live under permanent threat. International reports and local data document dozens of incidents annually, yet perpetrators are rarely brought to justice. What we see is not random crime, but a pattern of institutional tolerance for anti-Christian violence.

Today’s Kosovo Government: Finishing the Job

The current leadership in Pristina appears determined to complete what began in 1999: the near-total removal of the remaining Christian population. By supporting or failing to condemn figures like Džufka, by pushing historical revisionism that denies Serbian roots of Kosovo’s holy sites, and by maintaining policies that make daily life unbearable for non-Albanians, the authorities are conducting a form of slow-motion ethnic cleansing.

Christians in Kosovo are denied basic rights — freedom of movement, security, property restitution, and unimpeded worship. Serbian Orthodox monasteries, some over 800 years old, stand as islands under siege. The message is clear: Kosovo is being reshaped as an exclusively Albanian-Muslim entity, where Christian heritage is either appropriated or erased.

Albanian Muslim Radicalism: A Regional Danger

This campaign cannot be separated from the rise of radical Islam in Kosovo and parts of Albania. Kosovo produced more foreign fighters per capita for ISIS than any other European country. Wahhabi and Salafi networks, generously funded from abroad, have gained ground. When combined with aggressive ethnic nationalism, this creates a toxic ideology that views Christian Serbs not merely as rivals, but as existential obstacles to a Greater Albania project.

Džufka’s provocations — breaking into churches, planting Albanian flags on altars, and threatening canonical Orthodox leaders — represent the fusion of nationalism and religious extremism. If left unchecked, such radicalism will not stop at Kosovo’s borders. It threatens neighboring Christian communities in Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Bosnia, destabilizing the entire Balkan region.

The international community, which has invested heavily in Kosovo’s state-building, bears responsibility. Turning a blind eye to the persecution of Christians while celebrating “multi-ethnicity” in rhetoric only emboldens extremists. Basic human rights — the right to worship, the right to cultural survival, the right to physical safety — are being systematically violated.

Kosovo today stands as a warning: when radical ideologies, whether nationalist or Islamist, are allowed to dominate, ancient Christian civilizations can be dismantled in plain sight. The remaining Christians are not just fighting for their holy sites — they are fighting for their very existence. The Balkans, and Europe as a whole, ignore this reality at their peril. Immediate, firm international pressure is required before the last Christian voices are silenced and the last crosses are torn down.
