Vučić Resigns As Serbia's President — Will Seek Prime Minister Role In October 25 Snap Elections

BELGRADE — Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced his resignation on Sunday, September 27, ending his second and final five-year term and clearing the path for early elections.

Vučić announced he will run for Prime Minister in the October 25 snap parliamentary election, heading the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) list under the banner "Aleksandar Vučić – United Serbia."

Under Serbian law, National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabić becomes acting president upon Vučić's departure. A new presidential election must be scheduled within three months.

The resignation follows 18 months of student-led anti-corruption protests that destabilized his government and prompted the dissolution of parliament in September.

Vučić’s resignation comes seven months before his term was due to expire. Hundreds of his supporters cheered him in front of the Presidency building in Belgrade’s city centre as he made the announcement.

“This is the last evening for me in this building,” he told the flag-waving crowd minutes before resigning. “I have faithfully served you and my fatherland, Serbia… I am proud of what we have done together.”

The October 25 snap parliamentary election pits Vučić’s SNS and its allies against Students Win — a student-led anti-corruption movement — and European Serbia, an alliance of pro-Western opposition parties. Both opposition blocs have yet to nominate their presidential candidates.

Under Serbia’s constitution, the presidential election must be completed within 90 days, with the campaign lasting between 30 and 60 days. Vučić said the first round of presidential elections would be held by the end of December.
