According to a report by the Russian media agency Rador, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zaharova said that the Russian Federation will be forced to take action if Moldova joins the sanctions against Russia imposed by the West. Zakharova made these statements during a briefing. She stressed that Russia has not remained passive in response to the European Union's actions in the past.
"If Chisinau joins these restrictions, we must take appropriate countermeasures against the Moldovan side. This will not be our option, but a reaction to their hostile decisions," she said.
Nicu Popescu, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova, has announced that Moldova may soon join the sanctions imposed by the EU against the Russian Federation. In addition, the minister has announced that Chisinau intends to impose sanctions on 25 Russian individuals.
During a joint conference with Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă on Thursday, Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean said that his country is currently facing unprecedented hybrid attacks. He stressed that he would work to ensure peace and stability in the country. The prime minister also said that Moldova has always been committed to a peaceful resolution of the Transnistrian conflict. Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă added that the international community is aware of the threats Moldova faces. Coordination and support from Romania and other European partners are needed to maintain stability.
