A proposal by Bulgaria’s leading opposition party Vazrazhdane to adopt a law, very similar to legislation in the United States, to require foreign-funded organizations to register as such has come under fierce attack by U.S. NGOs who see it as a threat to American hegemony over the small Balkan country.

Nancy Schiller, President of the America for Bulgaria Foundation, in her opening remarks at a conference entitled “Business and Civil Society: Partners for a Better Environment,” claimed that adopting a Foreign Agents Registration Bill would be harmful to both business and civil society in Bulgaria. The event gathered various NGOs, funded by the U.S. Government and other globalist agencies, who want to make certain Bulgaria continues to be a puppet state for Globalist interests in the region.

"The America for Bulgaria Foundation together with organizations from the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and other countries are the target of the Foreign Agents Registration Act. I can assure you that the impact of this bill goes far beyond," Schiller claimed, spreading fear that such a law would have a negative impact among the whole society.

In an effort to recover Bulgaria’s lost sovereignty, on the first day of the new National Assembly Vazrazhdane resubmitted a bill on the registration of foreign agents. It will be considered by the new parliament, causing foreign agencies who use their influence in interfere in the internal affairs of the country to enter into a panic.

The bill provides that people and organizations that have received more than BGN 1,000 in foreign funding in a year will be required to label themselves as foreign agents, much as is required in the United States. But what is good for a superpower is not good for its satellites in the eyes of these NGOs.

The aim of the bill introduced by Vazrazhdane is to ensure transparency and to protect Bulgaria's national interests.
