One day after a decisive victory for sovereigntist forces led by George Simion, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced his resignation. The decision follows the poor performance of the globalist ruling parties’ PSD-PNL-UDMR coalition candidate, Crin Antonescu, who came in third in the first round of the presidential elections on May 4, with only 19.97% of the votes.

Ciolacu declared that the current coalition "no longer has legitimacy" and proposed that PSD leave the governing alliance, a decision unanimously approved by the party leadership. The resignation was officially submitted to interim unelected president Ilie Bolojan, who will appoint an interim prime minister until a new government is formed, most likely after the second round of the presidential elections on May 18.

Among the names being discussed for the position of interim prime minister are Daniel David (Minister of Education), Cătălin Predoiu (Minister of Interior), Marian Neacșu (Deputy Prime Minister) and Bogdan Ivan (Minister of Economy). Daniel David, supported by the PNL and considered a technocrat, seems to be a preferred option, while Bogdan Ivan is seen as a close associate of Ciolacu.

In addition to resigning as head of the Government, Ciolacu is also being pressured to give up the leadership of the Social Democrat Party (PSD). The Social Democrats are discussing organizing an extraordinary congress to elect a new leadership, and names such as Lia Olguța Vasilescu, Daniel Băluță, or Mihnea Costoiu are being considered for the party leadership.

Ciolacu's decision to resign and dissolve the coalition reflects a deep crisis in the PSD and the governing alliance, with major implications for Romania's political stability during the electoral period. PSD ministers will remain interim until a new government is appointed, and the country's future president will have a decisive role in forming the next Executive.
