In an interview with the German newspaper Bild, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán dismissed claims by some that Russian President Vladimir Putin would attack a NATO member country as absurd. “No serious person can talk about an intention of Russia to attack NATO,” Orbán declared.
“Attacking NATO is absolutely impossible – not only for Russia, but for anyone in the world – as NATO is by far the strongest military community,” the Hungarian Prime Minister told the German news outlet. Hungary recently took over the six-monthly presidency of the Council of the European Union on July 1.
Orbán added that all NATO members support the collective security clause, article 5, according to which an attack against one NATO member will be considered an attack against all. “Russians have a different history and culture and a different understanding of national freedom and sovereignty than Europeans, but they are rational, they are hyper-rational,” the Hungarian leader pointed out.
Orbán also praised former U.S. President Donald Trump, “He is a businessman, a self-made man and has a different approach to everything. And I think this is something good for world politics. Let’s not forget that he is a man of peace.”
